Our Program

Head-Over-Heels for Our Doodles:
The Sunstar Meadow Philosophy

We often get asked how we manage our breeding program at Sunstar Meadow, and our answer is simple: we keep it small, and we keep it right here.

Our Doodle parent dogs aren’t just breeding dogs—they are our daily shadows, hiking partners, and lap warmers. We believe a high-quality breeding program should never come at the expense of a dog’s (or puppy's) daily happiness. That is why we are a true companion breeder. We do not operate a kennel facility, and we do not use guardian homes. Each of our dogs including our mother dogs live, play, and thrive with us here at home. Our Mother dogs don't visit us for a few weeks, they live with us and whelp right here in the safety of our/their home, surrounded by the environment and humans they trust completely. When you adopt a Sunstar Meadow puppy, you are supporting a program where the parents live like royalty every single day of the year.

F1b Bernedoodle Puppy

Over the 10 years that we have been breeding and providing awesome companion, service and therapy puppies/dogs we have researched and developed our own extensive puppy enrichment program. Our program also includes ENS (early neurological stimulation) exercises as developed by the military in the Super Dog Program, ESI (early scent introduction), and components of the Puppy Culture Program.

Mini Sheepadoodle

Sunstar Meadow puppies are lovingly raised with our advanced puppy conditioning program. The developmental stages from birth to 16 weeks of age have a great influence on a puppy's overall behaviour and temperament. We focus on safely providing our puppies with as many stimulating experiences as possible.

While Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is an important part of our program, we don't stop there. We have criteria for each stage of puppy development, such as ensuring that the pups experience at least 5 to 7 different textures under their little puppy paws, introduction to a variety of puppy safe foods, Early Scent Introduction (ESI) as developed by Avidog and so much more.

Sunstar Meadow puppies are well started with their socialization, introduced to house training and conditioned to experience communal crates as safe spaces to relax and sleep. We also expose the pups to a variety of music along with all the sights, sounds, and activities of a busy household.

During their 8 weeks with us the pups are introduced to basic puppy manners, grooming with bathing and drying their fur, sani trims, and weekly nail trims. Each puppy has their nails trimmed and is freshly bathed and dried when they join you on Puppy Go Home Day.

Of course the quality of our puppies starts with our wonderful parent dogs!

We choose them carefully and understand that we are deeply blessed to have them in our lives. They add so much joy, love and fun to our day to day lives. Our dogs are not only temperament tested but they also undergo comprehensive DNA profiling through Embark, (genetic health testing) to help ensure that their puppies have the best start to life.

Why Do We Use ENS?

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) as developed by the US Military's Bio-Sensor Program is also known as the Super Dog Program. And with good reason as using ENS on neonates during days 3 through 16 stimulates their neurological system, which improves the growth and development of the puppy's immune system, cardiovascular system and stress tolerance. Studies show that ENS can also provide a greater resistance to diseases.

What Is Early Scent Introduction?

During the critical development stages of day 3 through day 16 of our puppies lives we use Early Scent Introduction (ESI) to help them with nose awareness and confidence. Early Scent Introduction enhances their ability to identify and react to scents and is beneficial to the puppy's development.

Sheepadoodle Sizes & Types

Sheepadoodles are a wonderful hybrid cross of the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle. There isn't a set standard for exact Sheepadoodle sizes but since the Poodle parent is the main reason Sheepadoodles have such a variety of of sizes, colours and coat textures, my size chart is loosely based on the common sizes for Poodles. In North America Poodles are registered in three sizes; Toy, Miniature and Standard.

Sizes:

Micro/Toy Sheepadoodle

Height 15" or Less

Weight 10 to 25 pounds

Mini Sheepadoodle

Height 15 to 22"

Weight 25 to 45 pounds

Standard Sheepadoodle

Height 22 to 27"

Weight 60 to 85 pounds

Types:

F1 Sheepadoodle

An F1 Sheepadoodle is the offspring of a purebred Old English Sheepdog and a purebred Poodle. This approximates the equal genetic, (and often temperament) balance of both breeds as F1 Sheepadoodles are roughly 50% OES and 50% Poodle.
The offspring from the first cross of two different purebreds is widely believed
to have more hybrid vigor than breeding purebred to purebred. This may actually be so to a certain extent providing that the parent dogs are health tested, temperament tested, responsibly bred and their puppies are well-conditioned and well-raised.

F2 Sheepadoodle

F2 Sheepadoodles are the offspring of an F1 Sheepadoodle bred to an F1 Sheepadoodle. Due to both parent dogs being about 50% OES and 50% Poodle this approximates the equal genetic, (and often temperament) balance of both breeds. When both of the F1 Sheepadoodle parent dogs carry the coat traits for straight, non shedding coats their puppies will have the desirable fluffy non shedding coats as well.

 F1b Sheepadoodle & Reverse F1B Sheepadoodle

An F1b Sheepadoodle is the offspring of an F1 Sheepadoodle bred back to a purebred Poodle. The size of the Poodle bred to the OES or Sheepadoodle is often used to bring down the size of the resulting puppies and to add the curlier coat often associated with non shedding. (Non shedding is also dictated by other coat traits so the same result may be achieved with the straighter coat of F1 and or F2 Sheepadoodles). F1b Sheepadoodles are roughly 25% OES and 75% Poodle.
Sometimes the F1b breeding is reversed to create a Reverse F1b Sheepadoodle which is usually about 75% OES and 25% Poodle. For example an F1 Sheepadoodle bred back to a purebred Old English Sheepdog.

F1bb Sheepadoodle

F1bb Sheepadoodles are the offspring of an F1b Sheepadoodle bred back to a purebred Poodle. Again, the size of the Poodle bred to the OES or Sheepadoodle is often used to influence the size of the resulting puppies and to add the curlier coat often associated with non shedding. These puppies will be approximately 10% OES and 90% Poodle.
